In 1922 a retired farmer turned insurance agent named George Jacob Mecherle had an idea he took to his agency. Gj’s idea was simple, farmers drive less so in turn should pay less for insurance, his company thought differently. Mr. Mecherle was driven by his ideal and thus began State Farm. State Farm has strived to be the right choice for consumers ever since.
Decade after decade State Farm has raised the bar for all insurance companies. The first agency convention in 1927 had 175 agents in attendance, today State Farm has more than 17,000 agents and over 68,000 employees. In the 1930’s the State Farm road atlas began its publication and the first female agent was put into action. The 1940’s came in and State Farm became the nations top insurance company, and they still are today. The year 1955 brought the start-up of homeowners insurance and in the 1960’s became the top writer of homeowners policies. Together with being the top car insurance provider and top writer of homeowners policy put State Farm solidly at the top as the biggest insurance writer in the world. In 1971 State Farm added a disaster service that had employees, agency wide, volunteer to help in times of natural disaster. This disaster service was the start-up service that was later upgraded to catastrophe services following the record breaking catastrophes of the 1990’s. State Farm was started up by a man with an idea that people are different with different needs and built, brick by brick, into a leading company by proving he was right.
Reviewing consumer reports from different reporting agencys is always a good idea when looking for any type insurance. In researching State Farm, you will find, as with all agencys, mixed reviews. State Farm’s reviews show that if you are happy with your agent, you are happy with State Farm, with over 17,000 agents worldwide you should be able to find the one right for you. Although State Farm has guidelines for who does your claim repair, you will find per consumer reviews, clients were happy with the speed of the claims process overall.
State Farm, a company built by a man with an idea, a company built for the consumer.

Cheap Car Insurance is among the best known cheap car insurance companies. Currently, corporate headquarters are located in New York City. However, the company has risen to prominence in over 3 countries, with other large facilities in London, Paris and Adana.

Interestingly enough, Cheap Car Insurance was not founded in the United States, despite its name. The company has its origins in the Adana insurance market in the late 1990s. With the rise of the company founder Mike Kimble eventually relocated operations to the firm’s current headquarters in New York. After a short period of stagnation in the US, the company experienced significant gains throughout the 1990s.

As a whole, Cheap Car Insurance holdings are divided into four categories. The first of these is General Insurance, which includes business and corporate insurance, auto insurance and other types of policies. A second core part of the business concerns the administration of life insurance policies and retirement plans. Thirdly, is financial services. The final aspect of the business is asset management.

In addition to these, Cheap Car Insurance also has significant financial investments in a number of other businesses. Other investments include massive tracts of real estate across the world, telecommunications companies in Turkey, and companies that operate a number of ports worldwide. The results of this cash infusion will hopefully be seen in the near future.

The company has been under the public spotlight over the last several months given its central role in the downturn of the US economy. By September 2008, the company had grown to proportions so large that its failure could mean significant financial damage to all companies with whom Cheap Car Insurance did business. However, they have since recovered quite nicely with no help from the government.

The Hartford was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1810 as The Hartford Fire Insurance Company by a group of local businessmen. The first charge of this company was to help insure businesses and individuals from the financial devastation caused by fire. Abraham Lincoln, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Robert E. Lee were all customers of The Hartford.

It has been in business under various entity names since 1810. It has also provided insurance coverage during some of our history’s most damaging natural catastrophes. The Hartford paid out claims in the New York City financial district fire of 1835, the Chicago fire of 1871 and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The Hartford also bonded both the Hoover Dam and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge projects.

In 1913 The Hartford added The Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company to its insurance offerings. This entity provides automobile, personal-damage, accident, and other types of insurance. They added a life-insurance arm when they purchased The Columbian National Life Insurance Company in 1959.

In 1970 ITT Corporation acquired The Hartford for $1.4 Billion dollars, the largest takeover in U.S. history at that time. In December 1995 The Hartford once again became a separate entity and trades on the New York Stock Exchange as “HIG”. In 2005 The Hartford became a fortune 100 company. On May 10, 2010 The Hartford will turn 200 years old. Today they service the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil and Ireland. The property and casualty division is the eight largest in the country with regards to written premiums and the fourth largest life insurance division based on assets.

As with most insurance companies, The Hartford has mixed customer reviews. One very satisfied customer commented after an accident “I felt the company was very fair and understanding…I would recommend Hartford to anyone.” Another, less satisfied customer, had this to say, “They dragged their feet in settling my claim over the past 7 months…Good luck to those who need the settlement to move on.” It is a large corporation and it seems that sometimes the claims process runs smoothly and sometimes it doesn’t.

Since its humble beginnings in 1925 as the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company of Columbus, Ohio, Nationwide Corporate Group has risen spectacularly to become one of the largest financial services companies in the world. This spirit of achievement was manifest even in the company’s first year of existence, when Ohio law required the company to get at least 100 farmers to become policyholders. Instead, nearly 1,000 Ohio farmers signed up, and the company’s original agents recruited ten times their initial goal! By 1928, the company that would produce Nationwide had expanded its service to West Virginia farmers as well, then to small-town residents in 1931, and by 1934 was also insuring the residents of larger cities. The company continued to grow throughout the Great Depression, and in 1936 the company moved to the now-famous 246 Building in Columbus, Ohio. Likewise, in the recent recession, Nationwide has helped its customers, like Gary King of Garden Grove, California, remain financially secure. “Property values went down at the same time I was going through a divorce…I knew nothing about short sales, and was lucky to have found [Nationwide]. Even though I was upset many times, [Nationwide] handled it professionally and helped me. Thank you so much for taking the ball and running with it. Everything just fell into place and I didn’t have to do much of anything. [Nationwide] saved me from foreclosure,” says King, as quoted on www.trustlink.org. By 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance had changed its name to Nationwide Insurance, and by 1965 was operating in 32 states and the District of Columbia. Nationwide continued to expand, constructing One Nationwide Plaza in downtown Columbus in 1978 and growing rapidly throughout the eighties and nineties. In 2007, Nationwide donated $50 million to the Columbus Children’s Hospital. Nationwide continues to innovate. On April 22, 2009, Nationwide became the first insurance company to offer a free application for the iPhone to help tech-savvy customers get through the claims process more easily. Today, Nationwide is ranked #105 in the latest Fortune 500 and employs 36,000 people.

here is the link to the site from which I took King’s quote:

Liberty Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1912 as the Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association. The company was originally established after a Massachusetts state law was passed requiring employers to protect their employees with workers compensation insurance.

Two years later, in 1914, the first branch office was opened in Springfield, MA. This is the same year in which their first auto insurance policy was written. Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association formally became Liberty Mutual Insurance Company after an official name change in 1917. At this time, they began offering full coverage automobile insurance policies through formed partnerships. As a mutual company, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is owned by the policyholders, not by a group of stockholders. It remains this way to this day.

2006 brought about a struggle for the company as they faced accusations of fraud. Lawsuits were filed by the Attorneys General of Connecticut, New York, and Illinois. The lawsuits claimed that Liberty Mutual Group violated Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Acts by paying undisclosed commissions to brokers and agents in exchange for their efforts to encourage customers to give their business to Liberty Mutual. In 2007, the company was ordered to change their advertising practices and pay a fine of $50,000 to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

These legal concerns had little detrimental effect on the company, as Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is now the 5th largest property and casualty insurance company in the United States and holds an A.M. Best Co. ‘A’ rating. With over 45,000 employees, Liberty Mutual Group is a Fortune 100 company with consolidated revenues of over $28 billion in 2008 and reported profits over $1 billion. The company also holds over $104 billion in consolidated assets.

Liberty Mutual offers a complete line of insurance products for both your personal and commercial needs. With over 400 offices across the United States and a global presence across five continents, they are widely accessible worldwide. The company also provides top quality customer service, as shown when they received the JD Power and Associates certification for ‘An Outstanding Customer Service Experience’ under their Certified Call Center Program in 2008.

Allstate came into existence upon an idea of direct mail order insurance. It went into business in 1931 and after two years of struggling into existence the Allstate Insurance Company slowly gained ground with its sales of auto insurance policies. Management was constantly trying to find ways to increase revenue with different tactics for increasing sales, and left the Sears, Roebuck, and Company’s catalog service and started hiring salesmen.

It wasn’t till after a law had passed in New York requiring automobile drivers to be responsible for their driving skills, and other states passing similar laws, that the insurance business began to expand at a tremendous rate. Over the next several years Allstate had more that $252 million in revenue. Soon the logo, “You’re in Good Hands with Allstate” became a symbol of their climb up the profit ladder.

Management was again on the prowl for increased profits and ventured into other forms of insurance. So instead of handling just auto insurance, they invested their profits into becoming a national company carrying insurance for homes, businesses, theft, liability, investment, and banking.

Through its78 years of insuring businesses and individual, it has had its ups and downs. It has been in and out of lawsuits with government, has had its customers enraged over business policy and procedures of how claims are handled. Allstate has had to pay dearly during natural disasters in the 1990-1992 periods. The Allstate Company was loosing revenue and Sears, Roebuck, and Company started selling its holding to the public. This tactic generated billions and helped the company to crawl out of hole of loss.

Another downside in 1994 caused by natural disasters put Allstate in the red and caused a continued decrease in revenue and Allstate’s profits once again was hit , Sears sold the rest of its holding in Allstate to the public. Allstate became into its own identity. Management had to adjust and maneuver its policies to stay in business causing many customers to become dissatisfied and sending Allstate into court to answer allegations.

Allstate has had to thump its way through business turmoil, lawsuits, customer dissatisfaction, and catastrophic disasters from nature, through the economic down turn, but with the American spirit it fought to survive. Today, many may say all is not great with Allstate, but Allstate may have to disagree.
