Liberty Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1912 as the Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association. The company was originally established after a Massachusetts state law was passed requiring employers to protect their employees with workers compensation insurance.
Two years later, in 1914, the first branch office was opened in Springfield, MA. This is the same year in which their first auto insurance policy was written. Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association formally became Liberty Mutual Insurance Company after an official name change in 1917. At this time, they began offering full coverage automobile insurance policies through formed partnerships. As a mutual company, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is owned by the policyholders, not by a group of stockholders. It remains this way to this day.
2006 brought about a struggle for the company as they faced accusations of fraud. Lawsuits were filed by the Attorneys General of Connecticut, New York, and Illinois. The lawsuits claimed that Liberty Mutual Group violated Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Acts by paying undisclosed commissions to brokers and agents in exchange for their efforts to encourage customers to give their business to Liberty Mutual. In 2007, the company was ordered to change their advertising practices and pay a fine of $50,000 to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
These legal concerns had little detrimental effect on the company, as Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is now the 5th largest property and casualty insurance company in the United States and holds an A.M. Best Co. ‘A’ rating. With over 45,000 employees, Liberty Mutual Group is a Fortune 100 company with consolidated revenues of over $28 billion in 2008 and reported profits over $1 billion. The company also holds over $104 billion in consolidated assets.
